Tractor and farm vehicle accidents cause the most fatalities on Irish farms, according to the latest report on farm safety from the HSA.
The figures are part of the HSA’s Farm Safety Action Plan, which was launched on 7 July, and break down the total deaths on Irish farms over the past ten years.
The report says that tractors and other farm related vehicles accounted for 37 deaths, or 19{b28040870e2dde01f25bc5b483275391226143b34751c4bb8f1feeecaec925a1} of total fatalities.
Livestock was the cause of 26 accidents (14{b28040870e2dde01f25bc5b483275391226143b34751c4bb8f1feeecaec925a1}), while timber-related accidents killed 13 (7{b28040870e2dde01f25bc5b483275391226143b34751c4bb8f1feeecaec925a1}) people.
Drowning and gas killed, and falling from a height both killed 20 people (10{b28040870e2dde01f25bc5b483275391226143b34751c4bb8f1feeecaec925a1}).
Falling objects and collapses killed 14 or 7{b28040870e2dde01f25bc5b483275391226143b34751c4bb8f1feeecaec925a1}, while electrocution accounted for 3 deaths.
