Huge organic farm in Donegal sells for €17.4 million

A farm in Co. Donegal, consisting of approximately 2,400ac, has sold for €17.425 million, according to Savills Ireland.

‘The Grianan Estate’ – one of Europe’s largest organic farms – has been snapped up for €17.425 million by Glenmore Estate Farms Limited from Donegal Investment Group plc.

The farm, which is situated at Speenoge, Burt, Co Donegal, less than 20 minutes from Letterkenny, is around 2,400 acres property of mainly land reclaimed from Lough Swilly. This makes it particularly fertile and suitable for all types of farming.

It includes 1,290 acres of organically farmed land and grows a range of crops such as cereals, red clover and root crops. There is also an extensive range of farm buildings which have overwintering accommodation for 400 head of cattle.

For the past 10 years, the farm has been producing over 3,000 tonnes of organic produce a year including milk, vegetables and cereals.

According to Pat O’Hagan of Savills, the sale generated significant interest from local and international investors, active farmers and farming companies:

“No other opportunity of this scale is likely to be presented again in the Irish farming property market, therefore it was no surprise that interest – from various buyer types – was strong.” The new owner of the estate, Glenmore Estate Farms who are based near Ballybofey bought the estate as it “complements their farming and renewable energy business”.
